Many Teens Struggled with Social Media Use in 2020. These Teens Stepped Up to Fight It.
This year has been hard for teens. From stay-at-home orders and virtual learning to missed out opportunities, teens have had a really rough year. On top of that, increased social media use among teens hasn’t helped.

Birmingham Teen featured in Worldwide Digital Wellness Report
Emma Lembke, a local teen, was recently featured in the Annual Bagby Digital Wellness Report, a collaborative paper that aims to have a positive impact and to make a change in the ultra-connected society. It is a digital wellness community effort, as it features over 37 expert’s perspectives from 12 countries. Emma is one of the 37 listed in the report alongside industry-leaders like Tiffany Shlain and Amy Giddon.

Teen-Led Group Releases New Podcast, Log Off and Listen Up, Discussing Social Media’s Impact on Teens
The Log Off Movement, led by a local teen, is releasing a new podcast series called Log Off and Listen Up, with the goal of showing social media’s effect on mental health. The podcast will also feature digital wellness industry leaders, including Tiffany Shlain and others. The public will also have the chance to influence podcast episodes.

Meet the teens lobbying to regulate social media
When Emma Lembke was a 12-year-old 6th grader, she was excited to join the world of social media. Here was a way to connect instantly to millions of people around the globe from her home in Birmingham, Alabama, she thought. Lembke was eager to express herself through an online persona and explore new information that she otherwise would not have access to. She first signed up for Instagram, and in the first week, she followed Oprah and the Olive Garden.
